I used to be a maximalist when it comes to skincare products. But I’m heading towards a less is more approach in my skincare now.

My ideal skincare routine was far from simple and I am still learning what matters most for my skin. It is so hard these days not to be hyped and distracted by the constant stream of new products. The key here is to pay attention to the products. I have learned about harmful synthetic preservatives that are used to extend the shelf life of a product as well as good ingredients. Let’s be responsible for yourself and your skin. It takes effort, but it’s worth it.
I know I am not one of those people who can use only like 2-3 products. I have tried and failed miserably. I’ve learned through many mistakes and purchases that the essentials of good skincare doesn’t vary much from person to person. It is the same for everyone. I’m not gonna review products because there are tons of reviews all over the Internet. I’m talking about the essentials today. The criteria I choose for myself is what are the things I will use when in a hurry. Quick, easy but effective.
1. Makeup Remover: I do not use much makeup, so I choose cleansing balm to remove dirt, oil without over-drying the skin. No alcohol.
2. Cleanser: I tend to choose a cleanser that does not strip away essential oil on my face, helps my skin stay moisturized and has no added fragrance.
3. Toner: This is used only for balancing pH level on my skin, I have one and it basically does its one and only job, nothing more, nothing less.
4. Serum: This can penetrate deeper to deliver active ingredients into your skin. Active ingredients I choose is usually safe, include calming inflammation, speeding wound healing and strengthening the skin barrier.
5. Moisturizer: I will choose the one that is non-comedogenic, close to our complexion’s natural sebum and suitable for all skin types because my skin is combination skin. It will be better if it is light-weight, odourless and non-greasy.
6. Sunscreen: This is a non-negotiable step. Because sun damage accelerates ageing and pigmentation like scarring. And I do not want that.
7. Exfoliant: Facial scrubs can cause micro-tears and it can be hard on my skin so I prefer chemical exfoliant (AHA, BHA, PHA,…). It will gently exfoliate for a smoother texture, unclog pores and even skin tone.
Creating a minimalistic skincare routine can help you to save time, money and prevents you from dwelling on skincare products. I do not think we need to own a slew of facial serums, creams and gels to have good skin. Our skin is born to protect us and repair itself when damaging. It needs time so be patient. Simple routine means you will have more time to focus on other things in life. Focus only on what has the greatest impact on your skin and skip everything else. That’s my thought for today!
